The principal function of the Public Works Roads Department (PWRD) is to develop and maintain the state road infrastructure for providing connectivity and efficient transportation in the state. It undertakes construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and culverts. The department implements the works through contractors with funds provided by the Government of Assam and Government of India. It also implements Externally Aided Projects funded by The World Bank and The Asian Development Bank. The major schemes implemented by the department include:
